“You don’t have what it takes to run a dojo!” That’s what my instructor said to me when I informed him that I was going to open up my own martial arts school. In classic Kung Fu movie fashion, he didn’t take it very well. But hell, I gave it a go anyways.
Do we ever really have what it takes? In my opinion, no we don’t. My instructor was right, at that moment I didn’t have everything necessary to accomplish that monumental task. Whatever dream you may have, chances are that you don’t have everything you need for the end result either. But luckily, that’s okay.
Running a business, or working on any dream really, is a lot like going through your next belt rank requirements. You show up in uniform and do the next designated thing. Sometimes it’s paperwork. After that it might be mopping the mats. The important thing is that you’re present and working through the necessary steps to get to your end goal.
Don’t let anyone convince you that you can’t handle your dream. Get dressed, show up, and do the next damn thing.
